Overview¶
Æther is a collection of services intented for small organisations and groups.
Services and Topics¶
At some point you received credentials from the system administrators which you can use to sign into all services you’re allowed to. The credentials consist of a username, propably in the format firstname.lastname and a password.
Profile¶
Note
The password reset link will be sent to your external email address. Even if you might have an internal email address one like luca.brooks@naturbeobachtung.de.
You’re user profile can be found here: https://auth.naturbeobachtung.de. You can sign in and change your email address or other personal details. To reset your password head over to https://auth.naturbeobachtung.de/reset-password/step1 and enter your username (firstname.lastname) or your email address. Once done you will receive an email with a link to reset your password. If the password reset doesn’t work send an email to FIXME.
Once logged in you can see a list of all services you’re allowed to access in form of groups at the bottom of the page.
Cloudstorage¶
See: https://cloud.naturbeobachtung.de.
Nextcloud is a file manager used for storage and sharing purposes. You can login with your username and password. The user documentation of Nextcloud is a good resource if you need more information on how to Nextcloud.
Mailinglists¶
Mailinglists are managed via Mailman. There may be publicly available lists which you can browse at https://lists.naturbeobachtung.de. You can also be invited to internal lists which you can see an manage after you logged in with your username and password. If you don’t have an account, mailing lists can be managed by sending emails.
Email¶
There are three types of email addresses this services provides:
- User addresses
A user address for example would be
luca.brooks@naturbeobachtung.de. It always consists of your username and the domain. Only you have acces to emails delivered to this account.- Mail alias address
A mail address might be myalias@naturbeobachtung.de. It can be an arbitrary address that can be also used to receive emails at your user address. Aliases can point to multiple user addresses, in that case all users get the email in their inbox. A mail alias can’t however be used to send emails.
- Shared mailbox
A shared mailbox can be accessed by multiple user accounts and used to send emails.
Accessing Your Mailbox¶
Attention
If you want to access a shared mailbox you have to login with username/sharedmailbox and your normal password. Accessing both your personal email address and a shared mailbox can be achieved by adding multiple accounts to your email client.
To access your mailbox you can add an account in your favorite email client or use the webmail service located here: https://mail.naturbeobachtung.de. Use your username and password for logging in.
On your first login it’s important to configure the name that get’s used while sending emails. Once logged in, head over to https://mail.naturbeobachtung.de/?_task=settings&_action=identities and make sure your email address and display name are correct. If you logged in via a shared mailbox change the email address to sharedmailbox@naturbeobachtung.de, without your normal username and the /.

About the project¶
The sourcecode of Æther is licensed under AGPLv3, and hosted on GitLab.
Currently this project deploys the services listed above to infrastructure of the cloud provider Hetzner, using their DNS and cloudserver solutions. These resources are managed by OpenTofu. To install, update or backup software services, we’re using Ansible. This allows being somewhat independant of the underlying cloud provider and infrastructure, since it can be replaced or substituted relatively easy.
